The Aurora Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize our longtime Chamber Member, Dream Designs as September's Member of the Month. Deanna Powell decided to open Dream Designs Bridal Shop in October 2000 and was open to the public April 1st of 2001.
Deanna and Mike Powell moved to Aurora, from Omaha, in 1979 so Mike, could go into the law firm with his father.
"After staying home and raising 3 children I was ready to go back to work," Deanna said. "I started, part time, in the Clerk’s office at the Court House. Eventually, I started working full time in District Court. After some of what I did was replaced by computer my job was cut down to 3 days a week and I started thinking of something else to do."
Before Deanna got married, she made wedding gowns in Omaha. During the years she was home with their children, she would do alterations.
"Much of what I did was bridal and I loved it. When my building became available I came over from the Court House on a coffee break and in 15 minutes time I decided to start a bridal shop. I never looked back."
As a bridal shop, Dream Designs focuses on wedding attire but they also offer Tux and Wedding Decoration Rentals along with any formal wear including prom attire.
Deanna says that every day at the shop is a great day at work but it can also be stressful some days.
"The hardest part of what I do is to keep everything running smoothly and on time. I’m the kind of person who likes to get things finished before a deadline."
She says that her typical day is filled with more phone calls and paperwork then you could imagine.
"I thought about retiring, but I thought that it would be fun to do weddings in 2020. Wrong…not so much this year! Who would have guessed! I don’t think that I’m ready to retire quite yet!"
Despite their daughters asking them to move back to Omaha they said they are happy right here in Aurora and love all of the friends they have made along the way. For more information about Dream Designs, check them out on auroranebraska.com under the business directory. |
